To realize the vision of Digital India, Wi-Fi Choupal is an ambitious initiative of CSC e-Governance services India Limited with the mission to transform India by providing seamless Internet connectivity in rural panchayats.
Wi-Fi Choupal aims to connect 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats in the country through highly scalable network infrastructure i.e. optical fibre cable. At present 7000 GPs of the country are in place with Wi-Fi infrastructure CSC Wi-Fi Choupal is in the process of expanding this infrastructure in additional GPs of the country.
In order to provide broadband connectivity to all households and inhabited areas of the villages under a GP through Village Level Entrepreneurs of Common Service Centres Scheme operated under supervision of CSC SPV , Wi-Fi Choupal is entrusted with the deployment of affordable and reliable communication infrastructure in rural areas and leverages the end-points of the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) of BharatNet and other Telecom Operators, available at the Gram Panchayat (GP) level, and extends it using a Wi-Fi based Network . At those places, where BharatNet infrastructure is not yet available, CSC SPV has a parallel agreement with service providers like “Airtel”, “Vodafone” and utilizes their infrastructure to provide connectivity in GP’s.
In addition to the Wi-Fi-based services, CSC Wi-Fi Choupal is also providing following additional services:
It is our belief that this technology can be rapidly deployed across all NOFN enabled GPs across the country. The rationale behind creating such an infrastructure is that with extended coverage of the village, certain essential G2C services could be rendered seamless to the end user at villages.
1. To carry on the business of providing solutions and services related to Internet technologies and WI-FI connectivity in Rural area and Semi-Urban Area in India to develop, maintain and facilitate network infrastructure.
2. Create a Wi-Fi Coverage zone in the village so as to cover all inhabited areas of the village using low-cost Wi-Fi equipment. The target end-user devices would be Smart phones and Tablets.
3. Address the most challenging issue for any rural technology is POWERING. Considered alternate modes of Powering (Solar) for the Wi-Fi and associated equipment given to the real-life situation of erratic to nil power situations in the Indian Villages
4. Test other value-added services using Wi-Fi as the medium for Communication
With CSC Intervention, the NOFN termination in a village could not only be extended for the general villagers but also to be extended over Wi-Fi to connect last mile Govt. agencies as customers, who really need connectivity viz.The 5P’s of a village”–
